At LoopTales, we often engage in exercises of future imagination. After participating in two major design events here in Lisbon — ModaLisboa and the Lisboa Design Week — I was inspired to rethink possible futures for furniture design and fashion.
That’s how the Lusitânia Armchairs, the Chez Magalhães, and two concept dresses came to life.
The Lusitânia Armchairs are inspired by the Age of Discovery, evoking shapes, textures, and materials that reference ships, sea voyages, and Portugal’s maritime heritage.
The Lusitânia Armchair No. 1 directly references maritime exploration. The materials envisioned for this piece include repurposed nautical elements such as reforested wood, small portholes, and details reminiscent of old caravels.
In its futuristic version, the armchair reinterprets the theme of navigation through the lens of space exploration. With a touch of retrofuturism, the Lusitânia of the future is imagined using lightweight and sustainable materials like aluminum, with finishes that echo the design of iconic sci-fi spacecraft — such as the Enterprise and ships from the Star Wars saga.
The Chez Magalhães draws its inspiration from the sky — a vital element during the Age of Exploration, used for orientation and navigation. Made from metallic alloys, this piece was designed to be both ergonomic and visually striking, blending aesthetics and functionality with celestial inspiration.
The two dresses — Portugalia I and Portugalia II — explore different aesthetics using the same base garment. The first reimagines classical elements with references to traditional Portuguese tilework, while the second blends these cultural motifs with technological patterns inspired by circuit boards, creating a dialogue between heritage and future.
